DMV Events for the Week of October 1-4, 2015

Hello Pumpkins!

I got a little caught up enjoying the move to Fall but was definitely awakened by this hot and muggy weather over the last few days!  The effects of Hurricane Joaquin are being felt and we are being told to expect some serious weather over the weekend.

photo taken by me

However, this past weekend, I attended a fabulous Bridal Shower that featured an Old Hollywood Glamour theme (lots of homage paid to Audrey Hepburn via pearls and perfect LBD's).  The guest of honor was in red which added the pop of color to the closing picture taken in the front driveway.  The event was held at the Marlboro Ridge Club which is a private upscale Upper Marlboro MD community club and I want to join!  Unfortunately, a great community room isn't enough for The ResourceNista to move so until then anyone having a small fete on those premises should is free to put her on the list--WINK!!

Here are your events:

October 2-11:  Alexandria celebrates American Craft Week, Alexandria VA NEW
Home to many creative artists producing unique, hand-made decorative and functional objects every day, Alexandria is a top destination for American Craft Week. Now-October 25:  Uprising (a play) by Gabrielle Fulton
I don't recall if I've ever featured a play but I had the opportunity to meet the music director and one of the cast from this play.  I not only meet them, I heard Mr William Knowles and Ms Roz White perform at small event, sponsored by some influential people, that I may or may not be able to discuss on this blog.  In any event, they are phenomenal so I know the play will be nothing less!

Now-November 8:  Women Chefs:  Artists in the Kitchen, Strathmore, N. Bethesda MD
It’s a tasting menu for the eyes when 21 visual artists blend their talents with 22 women chefs—and the results will amuse more than your bouche! The artists create portraits, the chefs offer cooking demos (sold out), and the true creative artistry of the kitchen gets served on a silver platter.

Working the Plan-ner!

Hello!

Well, a couple of weekends ago I extended my weekend by adding a few extra days off.  This allowed me to have a little staycation (ResourceNista definition:  get my house right, do stuff for other people, don't check work email and release some of the work toxins.)

I enjoyed every minute of it!  I got up at 7-something-AM everyday.  Two of those days were due to  my hot water heater replacement.  When faced with this appliance replacement, I had to accept the fact that I had been negligent in my home maintenance plan.  I thought I was on top of things because I had a little "To-Do" list but what I really had was a problem...an organizational problem.

Since knowing is half the battle, I developed a plan to encourage and motivate myself to stay on task during my days off.  Each night before bed, I assessed that goals/tasks I needed to accomplish.  Each morning, I refreshed my mind with the plan, added any last minute updates and then I moved into action toward accomplishing my daily goals.  What an amazing feeling!  It was so empowering when things came up and they didn't throw off the plan!  Since I was organized through planning and preparation, I could easily make adjustments and still met all of my daily goals.

How was I able to stay on task?  My planner.  Yep, I'm in the planner movement!

MAMBI Happy Planner-Gold Foil  photo taken by me
I've been using a planner for a while but over the last few months, I decided to take it to the next level.  Digging deep to determine what I really needed in a planner and what would keep me motivated to use it.  So, after a few tries, I finally purchased the Happy Planner by Me & My Big Ideas (MAMBI).  I'm told and have seen a few pictures/video about its similarity to the Erin Condren planner but the Happy Planner can be purchased at a local craft store and it was a budget friendly option.  This planner features the ability to remove pages, reinsert pages and add new pages.  Since I have already been using the Levenger/Staples Arc System for my bible study notes, this was really a no brainer!  I have been very happy with the system!

Shout Out for the Local Farmer's Market

Happy Wednesday,

In late May, my employer moved us to the heart of DC from the Foggy Bottom area.  And while I had access to several Farmer's Markets in our previous location, I seemed to really gain an interest and a greater appreciation for them when we moved.  I would race out of the office for lunch on Tuesdays to visit the market at City Center and take a late lunch on Thursdays to visit the Penn Quarter Market.  The quality and price of the produce was unbelievable.  I can remember being at the Penn Quarter Market during a spring/summer storm.  Each customer was helping to hold up the tent as they made their purchases...it was definitely an experience.

Again in my quest to support small businesses, I had to include the farmers!  Right?!

But then suddenly, (well not suddenly to them because it was listed on their website) the market at City Center announced it would close for the season.  I was sad but knew, the Penn Quarter Market would still be around so I bounced on my merry way.  Until...I realized...it is December and my beloved Penn Quarter Market will soon close for the season.  What will I do??????

Research, investigate...  As a smart ResourceNista, I've done some research.  Come to found out, there are several year-round Farmer's Markets and one is even located not too far from my home.

Since sharing is what this blogging thing is all about, here's a couple of  websites to make it easier for you to locate a DMV area Farmer's Market:

Fresh Farms

Hope you will get a chance to visit an area Farmer's Market!

Is it the Weekend--Already?! -- DMV Events for the Weekend of October 31 - November 2

I had a great weekend!  While I was not able to participate in any of the events I posted last week, I was able to spend time with someone celebrating the purchase of their first home.  I enjoyed a Game Night with a group of Christian Singles on Friday and a Soup Tasting on Saturday evening with a group of dynamic women who Love the Lord and know how to laugh!  By Sunday, I was tired yet inspired.  So with a LivingSocial deal to Rolling Ribs Part 2 in hand, I pressed my way.   And I'm here to report, I now understand why my Godchildren's father exercises and tracks his calories to make sure he has enough to eat there!  If you like ribs, chicken, soul food sides, sweet lemonade, good cake and GREAT customer service, please give them a visit before they close out for the season on November 23, 2014.

Q-pons!

I have a secret...no, not really because if you talk to me for any period of time, you will soon come to know...
I LOVE COUPONS!

More importantly, I love what coupons can do for you.  What? (that is you asking me)  Well, coupons allow you to purchase and experience the things you want to purchase and experience...for less!  Let me repeat...for less!  And I think that is a very good thing!

Last year, I discovered Ebates.  I had seen their advertisemenst many times but I filed them under "scam."  I just could not believe they would give me money to shop.  That was until, I got a recommendation from a Vlogger/Blogger who I deemed reputable.  I decided to give it a try and it is legitimate--the deposit to my paypal account confirmed it!

Here's how it works:
When you are ready to make an online purchase, go to Ebates first.  Locate the store and click on the site to be taken to the store's website.  Ebates creates a tracking number and then you shop as normal. You can still use coupon codes and any other discounts.  Once your purchase is complete, Ebates will let you know the amount that you will be receiving (based on the percentage/deal offered for the store..2%, 6%, and more).  Payment is not immediate but you will be paid.  Overall, that is the deal.  If you are an online shopper, Ebates is for you!

Interested in learning more?  Ready to start collecting your "Big Fat Checks?"  Use this link  and head on over to Ebates!

In a future post, I'll come back and share some tips and deals I have discovered along my couponing journey!

Until then,
